Thailand is known as the “Land of A Thousand Smiles,” and I would agree, having been there on memorable trips in Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai. I see myself going back in the future, too!
What I have not been to, though, is Thailand’s beaches. I see some look as beautiful as those in the Philippines, though I still say my country has the best beaches (yes, I’m biased – but with good reason!). Some friends and travel acquaintances do tell me there are worthy places to check out in Thailand, though, and I am sharing the list below.
Phuket
This is the largest island of Thailand, known for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and iconic landmarks, with personalized . The must-visit destination here is Patong Beach, famed for its lively atmosphere, incredible nightlife, and a wide array of shops and restaurants.
Those looking for solace and a serene experience can explore the quieter beaches of Kata and Karon. Where clear waters and soft sands provide perfect spots to unwind. Phuket houses iconic landmarks such as the Big Buddha, a massive statue perched on Nakkerd Hill, which offers panoramic views of the island and a tranquil atmosphere.
Visit iconic islands of Phang Nga Bay such as James Bond Island, officially known as Koh Tapu, which is popular among tourists for its rock formations. You can also explore Hong Islands known for their lagoons, and crystal-clear waters. Another prime attraction here to explore in Phuket is the Phang Nga National Park. It is home to diverse wildlife and mangrove forests best explored with boat tours to discover hidden caves and grottoes.
Pattaya
Explore Pattaya, one of the most scenic locations in Thailand, located on its eastern Gulf coast. Pattaya is famous for its lively atmosphere, multitude of attractions, and beautiful coastline. The prime highlights of Pattaya include its stunning beaches such as Pattaya and Jomtien.
Pattaya Beach presents a bustling atmosphere with its numerous water sports activities, dining options, and nightlife. While Jomtien Beach offers a more relaxed environment, ideal for families and those looking for a relaxing retreat.
Get unique insights into Thailand’s rich culture as you visit the Sanctuary of Truth. It is an elaborate wooden temple showcasing intricate carvings and mirroring traditional Thai art and architecture. Another fascinating attraction to explore here is the Wat Phra Yai which houses the imposing Buddha statue and provides a bird’s eye view of the city. To experience the dynamic evening scene in Pattaya explore its Walking Street which is decked with neon lights, bars, nightclubs, and entertainment shows.
Krabi
Krabi is a beautiful province located in the southern region of Thailand, famous for its stunning natural beauty and vibrant outdoor activities. The star attraction to explore here is the Railay Beach. The beach lures its visitors with its cliffs, crystal-clear waters and soft sands making it perfect to unwind. The beach can be reached by boat only and offers a serene escape with adventurous and fun-filled activities such as rock climbing, and kayaking.

Unwind and relax as you explore Krabi’s Emerald Pool and Hot Springs which provide a refreshing experience in natural thermal pools located amidst the lush rainforest. Visit the maze of stone caves called Wat Tham Sua, also known as Tiger Cave, a remarkable place known for its stunning views and spiritual significance.
Koh Phi Phi
Just a short boat ride from Krabi are the Phi Phi Islands, or Koh Phi Phi – looking at the photos, they remind me of Palawan – especially Maya Bay – and friends say they are similar. In fact, the movie The Beach was filmed here. So, if I can only go on one beach trip in Thailand, I would go to Koh Phi Phi – and Krabi, since it’s on the way.

Other beautiful beaches in Phi Phi are Loh Dalum, which is conveniently in the main area of the island, Long Beach, and Nui Beach.
Like Palawan, Phi Phi is also great for snorkeling and scuba diving, so it’s good to bring your mask and fins if you have them!
Koh Samui
Koh Samui is a well-renowned island located in Thailand’s Gulf of Thailand. The island houses prime attractions including the beautiful beaches such as Chaweng and Lamai boasting their soft sands and clear waters. Along with wellness retreats offering experiences like yoga and spas in serene settings. The Big Buddha Temple, which houses a golden Buddha statue, is a must-see landmark with an astounding height of almost 40 feet.

Koh Samui houses the famed Ang Thong National Park, a pristine island ideal for adventure activities such as kayaking, snorkelling, and exploring its limestone formations. Nature lovers can explore the Na Muang Waterfalls offering a refreshing escape with their lush surroundings and cascading waters.
Chaweng Beach located on Koh Samui’s east coast is a stretch of around 7 kilometers boasting a vast area of white sands and turquoise waters. It is the hub of adventure activities and entertainment and houses several beach bars, restaurants, and shops. Thrill seekers can indulge in various water activities such as jet skiing, parasailing, and snorkeling.
There are indeed beaches worth exploring in Thailand, which I might consider visiting in the future. Even though some landscapes and seascapes may be similar to the Philippines,’ I understand that there will be a difference in experience, especially with the culture. A friend told me it was a different experience visiting temples alongside beaches, for example.
